What is the ultrafiltration cost?

In small to medium-scale water production scenarios, ultrafiltration systems with capacities ranging from 250 LPH to 1000 LPH have become frequently used separation equipment due to their strong adaptability and ease of operation.

This article will focus on two main aspects: initial equipment investment and long-term operation and maintenance.

Ultrafiltration procurement costs

Equipment procurement costs increase proportionally with processing capacity, but the equipment cost per unit of treated water gradually decreases due to economies of scale.

For small 250 LPH ultrafiltration equipment, the price range for mainstream models is approximately $1430-$4300.  The core configuration includes ultrafiltration membrane elements, a booster pump, and a basic control module. To compensate for flux decline during long-term operation, a 10%-15% redundancy in membrane element area is required.

The price of 500 LPH equipment rises to $5730-$11470. The membrane elements are often upgraded to more pollution-resistant hollow fiber or spiral-wound types, and a stainless steel magnetic drive booster pump is included to improve operational stability and service life.

For 1000 LPH industrial-grade ultrafiltration systems, the basic model starts at $2580, while high-end models with water quality monitoring and automatic backwashing functions can cost $7170-$14330. The total power of the supporting drive equipment needs to be matched to 5-10 kW to meet the high flow rate processing requirements.

Ultrafiltration maintenance costs

Compared to the initial investment in equipment, the long-term operating and maintenance costs have a more lasting impact, mainly encompassing four categories: energy consumption, chemical consumption, membrane element replacement, and labor costs for operation and maintenance.

In terms of energy consumption, the unit water production energy consumption of the 250LPH-1000LPH ultrafiltration system is stable at 0.1-0.3 kWh/m³. Taking the 1000LPH equipment as an example, the power consumption per hour is approximately 1-2 kW.  Based on an industrial electricity price of $0.086/kWh, the daily energy cost is approximately $2.06-$4.13. Chemical consumption is mainly concentrated on disinfectants and cleaning agents. The commonly used sodium hypochlorite is added at a rate of approximately 0.005 kg/m³.  Based on a unit price of $2.87/kg (equivalent to 20 RMB), the chemical cost per unit of water produced is only $0.014.

The lifespan of membrane elements is affected by the quality of the influent water and the operating frequency, typically lasting 6-12 months. A single membrane element for a 250 LPH system costs approximately $28.5-$71.5, resulting in an average annual replacement cost of approximately $43-$143. For a 1000 LPH system, due to the increased number and surface area of membrane elements required, the average annual replacement cost rises to $215-$573. Furthermore, the water consumption during the system backwashing process accounts for only 2%-5% of the total water production, eliminating the need for significant additional water resources.  Manual operation and maintenance costs are approximately $71.7-$143.4 per month, keeping overall operating expenses within a manageable range.

Summarize

Cost optimization for 250LPH-1000LPH ultrafiltration systems requires balancing initial equipment investment with long-term operational efficiency.  The larger the system's processing capacity, the more pronounced the advantage in terms of overall cost per unit of treated water.
